A wide range of accommodations is available in Ethiopia. As an emerging tourist destination, you shouldn’t expect luxury though. For example, only a few truly 5-star hotels are available in Addis Ababa. Most destinations have a few tourist-class hotels which are considered ‘best in town’. According to international standards, they don’t go often beyond 3 stars. Even the best hotels sometimes have problems with water or power supply. Don’t expect everything to work all the time. In the better hotels, a reasonable number of staff speaks English and the restaurant is often one of the best in town.

Lodges and resorts

A recent development is the availability of beautiful lodges and resorts in different corners of the country. Most of them are small (10 to 20 rooms) and build in local style. Build in a beautiful setting and with a great atmosphere and personal service. When it fits within your budget these lodges are our first choice of accommodation. Or at least you could consider including one or two in your itinerary, which you won’t regret. The price indication for this kind of accommodation is from USD 100 to 700 per room per night.

Tourist class hotels

Over the years we selected tourist-class hotels all over the country from which we received good feedback. This kind of accommodation suits most travelers well. Price indication for this category: from USD 40 to 120 per room per night.

Budget accommodation

For the budget-conscious traveler who doesn’t mind too much about accommodation while traveling, plenty of budget accommodation is available. Overall it is mostly neglect in maintenance which brings hotels into the budget category. Although there are many hotels in this category we still choose the better ones with rooms with toilet and (not always hot) shower en-suite. The rooms are sometimes very small and not too clean but the beds are in general fine with clean sheets. The good thing about budget hotels is that they are in the middle of the town and give good opportunities to go ‘local’. The price indication for this category is less than USD 40 per room per night. We don’t recommend the lower end (below USD 25) in this category unless you are on a very tight budget.

Camping

If you really travel off the beaten track or on a trek, camping is the way to go. In some places in the south, it is a welcome alternative to the available other accommodation, whether in price, comfort or availability. The campsites are basic but the camping materials provided by Boundless are of good quality. We provide all equipment including a tent, mattress, sleeping bag, and pillow, you don’t have to bring those bulky items yourself. The food provided by our own chefs while camping is excellent. Our staff will take care of everything. Let us know if you prefer camping and we include some unforgettable nights under the stars in your itinerary. Although for small groups costs add up because we have to bring everything with us from Addis Ababa.
